A Colorful Fall Festival

This year, our church did a Trunk or Treat for our Halloween Fall Festival.  Our ABF decided to decorate our trunk as a box of crayons and then we could all wear different colored shirts and hats to be crayons!  Since it was easy to dress the part, I was able to stop by after work.  Colin was in busy season as usual, so he couldn't make it, but we had lots of crayons to take care of our trunk.

Truth be told, I think Ray did most of the work, but we all enjoyed some good fellowship!

Texas State Fair

Today, Colin and I went to the Texas State Fair!  I had only been once before, so I was excited to see what new things they had to offer, and try a new fried food!

We explored the car show exhibits first because they are always a favorite.  I had to sit in my dream car (from when I was 16) - a red Volkswagon Beetle!

 I thought this was pretty cute, too!

 
Then, we stopped for a snack - seasoned curly fries! 

We checked out some more exhibits and saw some amazing creations.  We shopped around in Pioneer's General Store and even saw a food contest in process.  The judges looked intense!

Since Big Tex burned down earlier this weekend, I took a picture in front of the next best thing - the Statue of Liberty!

We ended our trip with a "heavenly deep fried brownie!"  YUM!

Halloween Party

On Friday, we went to Colin's annual work Halloween party.  We are usually still trying to figure out what we are going to wear at the last minute.  Going to a Halloween shop and picking something out would be easy, but let's be honest...it is so expensive for something you will only wear once! 

This year, Colin found a mask online several months ago that he knew would be an instant hit at the party.  The only problem was I still needed a costume!  We knew we wanted to go as a couple, or at least have our costumes coordinate.  Then, I had an idea and we were set!

Luckily, we only had to buy a few supplies to execute the costumes.  We already had all our clothes.  I made a crop (whip) out of a wooden dowel and black electric tape.  I cut off most of the brim off a hat from Target to make my helmet.  We used yarn to make a tail for Colin.  He wore black shoes and black gloves for hooves, and then we used white tape on his ankles and wrists like a show horse.

Everyone LOVED the costumes.  They thought they were hilarious and were impressed by how thought out they were.  We even won the trophy for Most Creative Couple!

It was a great party.  The decorations are always superb, or should I say spooky!  There was a coffin in the front yard, flying rats on the patio, skeletons floating in the pool, and even a guillotine in the backyard!  We decided to try out the pillory.

Now, we need to think of good costumes for next year!

Fried Food Cookoff

Some of our ABF friends, the Zellners, hosted a Fried Food Cookoff this weekend.  In honor of the State Fair currently going on, we all brought foods to experiment frying.  There were "salty" and "sweet" categories that we could compete in.

 Colin and I opted for edible options - fried squash and fried green beans.  The other salty entries were fried jalapeño poppers, and fried avocado (the winner!).  Our green beans came in second place!  Woo-hoo!

The sweet entries were fried cake balls, fried bananas, and fried Reese's peanut butter cups.  It was a tie between the cake balls and Reese's, so they had a ring toss to break the tie.  They were both delish, but the Reese's ended up taking home the prize - CORN DOGS!

The squash did not come out crispy like it normally does (although people claimed they really liked it), so I claimed the biggest fail ("the sucker") prize.

They even had a photo station setup with props!  Everything was wonderful - the food, the decor, and most importantly, the company!
